Day 2  : Beijing – The Summer Palace

With a population of over 10 million, Beijing "Capital of the north," remains imbued with the rich history of the Royal China. Beijing also has an incredible collection of art and historical objects and expresses a kind of ideal city, and for the Chinese, is the Promised Land.

  • The Summer palace , was built in 1750. It is a masterpiece in the art of Chinese gardens. It features the natural landscape of hills and open water with pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges of the Qing era.

Day 3: Beijing – The Forbidden City and Tian An Men Square

  • Chinese cuisine is guided by the yin and the yang (spicy taste - bitter-sweet flavors, dish in sauce - fried food, meat - vegetables); it is a mixture of flavors and colors. The Chinese cooking is very fastidious. The diverse food preserves their nourishing qualities because they've been cooked very fast and in few fat.
  • Tian An Men square is in the heart of Beijing, in front of the Forbidden city. The square is home to a blend of modern and ancient monuments
  • The Forbidden city , is a real city within the city, and was seen as the center of the earth. This is why the place was also called the "Forbidden Purple City."

Day 4: Beijing – Mutianyu Great Wall, the Ming Tombs, Factory of "cloisonnés" (enamel) and the Sacred Path

  • Factory of "cloisonnés" (enamel) . Beijing is the cradle of the art of cloisonné. The first ones appeared under the Yuan dynasty (1271 - 1368).
  • Mutianyu Great Wall is located more than 70km north-east of Beijing. It has 15 two-storey fortresses and an alarm tower. The architectural design of this section comes from the northern Qi dynasty.
  • The Ming Tombs host the tombs of thirteen of the sixteen emperors of the Ming dynasty. The first tomb was built in 1409 while the last one was built 200 years later, just after the beginning of the Qing dynasty.
  • The sacred path can be reached through a marble portico of five marble arches of 14 meters high and 29 meters wide, and built in 1540.

Day 5: Beijing / Pingyao – The Hutongs, Temple of Heaven, the Lamas Temple and Liulichang street

  • The Hutong, made of Siheyuans (enclosure of four houses around a square yard) the main constructions in the Hutong, slowly disappear in favor of high modern buildings.
  • The temple of heaven is one of the most photographed building of the world because of its elegant beauty and its symmetry.
  • The lamas temple is one of the biggest and most beautiful lamaist temple. Built in 1694, it was a prince's residence until the lamas settled there in 1732.
  • Liulichang street was a book market under the Qing dynasty. Today, it is a cultural center where you can find all articles of fine arts.

Day 6: Pingyao – Rishengchang museum, Shuanglin monastery, houses of Lei Lutai and of the Qiao clan, Zhenguo Temple

Pingyao has a history of more than 4 000 years and is registered on the UNESCO world heritage list. It underwent only few changes since the dynasty Ming (1368-1644). The city presents a full of life image of the cultural, social, economic and religious life of the Han people approximately 1000 years ago.

  • Rishengchang museum used to be a "finance house", as Pingyao had a lot, and consists of 100 rooms, among them offices, apartments and a kitchen. The museum also displays ancient cheques.
  • The Shuanglin monastery , or from its original name Zhongdu monastery, was built during the first years of the North's Wei dynasty (368-534). You will discover 2052 tall and small colored statues, modeled under the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing.
  • Lei Lutai's house; he was famous in the past century, as he was a shopkeeper who became rich thanks to the counter he founded in Pingyao.
  • Clan Qiao's house. This house of 300 rooms, which was of use as set to the film of Zhang Yimou " Wives and Common law wives " became a museum. Realized as a fortified city, this house conceals real pieces of art : finely sculptured lathing and watercolors of the 18th century.
  • Zhenguo temple. Built in 963, under the Han dynasty, it constitutes a real witness of antique Chinese architecture : the palace is square and the roof is huge. It is well-known for its 10,000 Buddhas' room also called "Treasures of thousands years".

Day 7: Xian – Muslim Quarter, Great Mosque, Shaanxi Museum

  • The Shaanxi History museum is located in the southern suburb of Xian , the capital of Shaanxi and the ancient capital of China. The museum occupies an area of 65,000 sqm and counts 370,000 objects.
  • The mosque and the Muslims' district. Ten of the 55 communities that China counts are of Muslim faith. The mosque in Xian was founded under the Tang in 732, but the current oldest buildings date back to 1404.

Day 8: Xian –The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Calligraphy, the Medicine market and the Terracotta army

  • The big wild goose pagoda is one of the oldest structure in China. It is located inside the temple of benevolence (Da ci so), whose foundation dates back to the mid-seventh century.
  • Calligraphy: find out with a Chinese professor the different styles of calligraphy techniques bases, and learn how to handle a brush and ink.
  • The medicine market sells typical preparations based on salamanders, dried snakes, scorpions, mushrooms and so on.
  • The terracotta army is regarded as the Eight wonder of the World and consists of a group of terracotta imperial guards and their horses which are arranged in a battle formation.

Day 9: Chengdu – Dujiangyan irrigation System and Wolong

Chengdu is the capital of the province of Sichuan and its economic center. It is known for the historic vestiges, its subtropical landscapes and its natural reserve of pandas.

  • Dujiangyan irrigation system. It continues to regulate waters of the river Minjiang and to distribute them on the fertile lands of the plains of Chengdu.
  • Wolong. It's in this natural reserve, created in 1963, that the first research base on pandas opened.

Day 10: Chengdu / Guilin – Qing Yang Gong Temple, Bamboos park, Erwang Miao Temple and Green tea discovery

  • Qing Yang Gong temple. Right by the Wenhua park, this temple is the seat of the Taoist association of Sichuan. Laozi would have appeared here under the shape of two green goats. You can admire a very beautiful wooden skeleton there, richly decorated.
  • Bamboos park. Called the "Pavilion on the river" it is well-known for its luxurious bamboos' forest which boasts more than 150 varieties of bamboos from China, Japan and southeast Asia.
  • Erwang Miao temple. Also called the "Temple of the two kings", as it honors Li Bing and his son who invented the Dujiangyan irrigation system.
  • Green tea discovery. Tea plays a main part in the Chinese people's life. The city is renowned for its tea houses and while discovering the town, you will stop by one of them to taste the green tea of the region.

Day 11: Guilin / Yangshuo – Cruise on the Li River

Enjoy a cruise on the Lijiang River that starts in Guilin and meanders for 51 miles. Discover the dream-like charm of the already picturesque landscape of the town. The Lijiang River is an ever-present witness to fantastic peaks, clear green waters and fertile fields. The cruise will end in Yangshuo, set in an ethereal landscape. Enjoy the beauty of the rice terraces in this breathtaking place!

Day 12: Yangshuo / Ping’An – Longji Terraces

  • Longji terraces. The rice is cultivated until 1300m, since more than 2000 years, producing annual returns from 1 to 2 tons by hectare without agrochemicals contributions. You will also have the occasion to meet the various minorities which settled down in these mountains.

Day 13: Ping'An / Guilin / Shanghai – The Bund and Nanjing road

Shanghai is now the real capital of China. This megalopolis, once a small fishing village, has become the Chinese center of business and finance, while being one of the most active ports in China.

  • The Bund is the most famous place of the city and extends over 1.6 kilometers along the Huangpu River. It was once known as the "Wall Street of Asia" and is lined with buildings in the style of the 1930's.
  • Nanjing road is known as the fifth avenue of Shanghai. It offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, gift shops and night clubs.

Day 14: Shanghai – The Jade Temple, Yu Garden and the old town and the Museum of Art and History

  • The Jade Buddha temple. Two of the most famous Buddhas are housed in this temple. One is in white jade, in a sitting position while the other is in green jade in a rare lying position.
  • The new Museum of Art and History was founded in 1952. It is one of the biggest museums in China.
  • The old town offers a local bazaar with traditional crafts; you may cross the pond to eat or to have a tea in the Wu Xing Ting tearoom.
  • The Yu Garden 's name stands for pleasing and satisfying. It was built to provide tranquility and happiness to the parents of Pan Yunduan.

Day 15: Shanghai – The antiques market, plants and insects' market and Xintiandi

  • The antiques market. From the souvenir statue in seals in stylized characters to the copies of Qing's vases, Mao's portraits and propaganda posters, you can find everything there.
  • The plants and insects' market allows you to discover plants and flowers exposed in the streets. Inside you will find birds (swallows, parrots, canaries, pigeons), fishes, rabbits and roosters but also bird's songs cassettes.
  • Xintiandi is a trendy pedestrian street made of Shikumen and modern buildings.
