The Reed Flute Cave

Print E-mail

The Reed flute cave is located five kilometers northwest of Guilin. For years, the Reed Flute Cave has always been part of the tour itinerary for locals and tourists alike. It got its name from the lush and green reeds that grow on the outside of the cave. These are the same reeds that are made into flutes by the people living in Guilin.

Spelunking enthusiasts would surely get a kick of exploring the Reed Flute Cave!

Upon entering the reed flute cave, you will find yourself facing many stone pillars, rock formations and stalactites inside the cave. The rock formations that appear in varying shapes and sizes are caused by carbonate deposition which is abundant in almost all caves anywhere.

When people walk along the 240 meter long cave, they delight in the amazing spectacle they behold. To add to its mystic and beauty, colored lightings are installed inside the cave to guide the people through their trek. The seemingly endless spots that continue to change as you walk through the stone pillars can give you the feeling of peace living in paradise where God is.

An interesting thing which people do when they visit the Reed Flute Cave is giving the natural legendary formations a poetic name. This habit is very common because once you are inside the cave; you have to use your imagination to give each carving and formation a name which contributes to the story of how the stone was formed. Each rock formation has its own name in order to identify them from one another. Some of the names are Virgin Forest, Fruit Mountain, Crystal Palace, Dragon Pagoda and other likewise attractive names.

When you visit the Reed Flute cave, tourist guides narrate stories about the mountain and its lighting formation and this adds to the mystery that the cave emits. The inscriptions written on the cave wall are said to have been written from the time of the Tang Dynasty making the cave a popular destination for scholars, documentaries and tourists.

A trip inside the U-shaped cave can last for an hour or more. This route takes the people on different spots and locations along the cave. The tour ends with them exiting through another cave that is near where they entered from.
