Kowloon is one of the four main parts that makes up Hong Kong. Kowloon literally means nine dragons which represents the eight peaks of Hong Kong. These are the Kowloon Peak, the Tung Shan, the Tate’s Cairn, the Temple Hill, the Unicorn Ridge, the Lion Rock, the Crow’s Nest and the Beacon Hill and the ninth being the Chinese Emperor.
Kowloon faces the north part of Honk Kong Island, on the other side of victoria bay, and on the southern part of the mainland section of the New Territories. The tip of the area which faces north of the Island is what is known as Kowloon today. This area in Kowloon is the melting pot of different shops and tourists which covers up most of the economical ventures of this region. Kowloon is lit up with brightly colored neon lights showcasing the beauty of the city. Although it might project that money is the only value in Kowloon, the current Hong Kong Cultural center tries to make this place unique and gave way to the development of museums and other historical places to visit. Kowloon has five districts namely Kowloon City, Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po, Wong Tai Sin, and Yau Tsim Mong. One of the most popular places for tourists is the Tsim Sha Tsui which is on the southern tip of Kowloon. This place is mainly known for its shopping opportunities and bargain prices. The Promenade, located in the East of Tsim Sha Tsui is a famous tourist destination in Kowloon where tourists can stroll and see the wonderful views of Victoria Harbour especially at nights. Wong Tai Sin Temple is also a popular tourist spot in this area. The temple has a hermit who is said to have healing powers and is able to make predictions about the future. There are also fortune tellers inside the complex and a Chinese pharmacy has been established inside the temple. This makes the temple worth visiting. For plants and garden lovers, the Good Wish Garden can also be found in the temple. This garden is full of plants and artificial waterfalls which makes it a great place for evening picnics. |
