Known as China's number 1 pedestrian shopping street, Nanjing Road extends from the Bund in the East all the way to Yan’an Road and Jingan Temple junction in the West. It was formerly considered as the oldest shopping street in Shanghai and became a British Concession and Settlement area during the Opium War. Nanjing Road was the street where foreign goods were transported and exchanged in large numbers.
Over the years, Nanjing road has been rebuilt and remodeled in order to accommodate more establishments as well as tourists that visit the area. Walking through the street, one will be amazed at the modern arcades and shopping malls that dominate the place. With open restaurants, bars and lingering sounds from the street, there are lots of flashing neon signs which lighten the magnificent skyscrapers and advertising billboards displaying the bright skyline of Shanghai.
